Q. 1) There is news in many newspapers about the recent De-Recognition of CPS courses in Maharashtra. What is your comment on this?
We believe that the order has been passed in due course, without holistically looking and verifying various facts, and allowing CPS to address various issues. We have always protected the best interests of our students and provided the best opportunities to our students; be it infrastructure wise, course wise and faculty wise. Being a 111-year institution, we faced many situations before as well and we overcame all of them. CPS is exploring its options and I am sure we will overcome this phase as well. Under such circumstances we urge all our students not to panic.
Q. 2)Talking about 111 years of legacy please tell us the journey of College of Physicians and Surgeons of Mumbai (CPS).
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Mumbai (CPS, Mumbai), founded in 1912 by Surgeon Gen. Sir HW Stevenson and the Government, is a pioneer in medical education, focusing on excellence and enhancing students’ learning experiences. The institution was established on the lines of Royal College of London with an aim to increase specialists in medical fields in India. CPS is one of the first institutions to offer Postgraduate training in India. With a strong legacy, committed faculty, and practical knowledge, CPS empowers students to become skilled healthcare professionals. The institution is dedicated to spreading health education nationwide and shaping the next generation of healthcare leaders.
Q. 3) Could you highlight the milestones CPS has achieved in the medical field?
CPS has been instrumental in shaping the careers of over 45,000 postgraduate physicians and has emerged as a beacon of excellence in the medical community. CPS has had the privilege of being founded and mentored by some of the stalwarts in the field of medicine, who realized the need for specialized doctors, which were scarce at that time. CPS still finds mention in Medical acts of many states like West Bengal, Punjab. Until late sixties or early seventies CPS Fellows could directly appear for FRCPS – London and were registered in the National medical register of UK. At present CPS has MOU/ Recognition via GR in nine different states across India, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Dadra Nagar Haveli, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Meghalaya and Odissa. CPS also finds mention in Medical Act of Malaysia
CPS has again tried to re-establish its relationship with Royal college and has got affiliated for MRCP and Anaesthesiology.
CPS has tied up with the BAPIO Training Academy (BTA) where in CPS students after completing their CPS Diploma /Fellowship can opt for training in the UK which will be paid training ie: the students will be paid stipend. For details the students can visit the CPS website.
CPS will soon start a state-of-the-art Simulation Lab, allowing students to engage in hands-on training in a simulated clinical environment, enhancing their confidence and competence to tackle real-world medical challenges with proficiency.
Q. 4) Faculties are the pillars of any institute. Please highlight the prominent faculties at CPS and what is their role in students’ growth?
CPS has a distinguished faculty with experts in various medical disciplines, who significantly impact student growth and success. The faculties offer valuable knowledge, experience, and expertise, creating an enriching academic environment and providing guidance. Notable faculty members include Dr. Shantilal Sheth, Dr. NA Purandare, Dr. VH Salaskar, Dr. HD Dastoor, Dr. Shirish Sheth, Dr. UK Sheth, Dr. YK Ambdekar, Dr. KK Modi, Dr. Jassawalla (Dean of Wadia), Dr. Sanjay Oak, Dr. Avinash Supe, Dr. Jehangir, Dr. NC Joshi, Dr. AS Ahuja and many others. CPS organizes two lecture series in each subject every year where in each day renowned doctors from their respective fields take lectures and guide the students, preparing them not only for examination but for their future practice in the medical field. CPS also conducts special lectures for students such as NAL, PAL, focusing on specific areas of interest, emerging trends, and practical aspects of medical practice. These lectures are open to CPS alumni as well as the entire medical fraternity. The commitment of faculties to quality education and mentorship fosters a culture of excellence, enabling CPS students to become competent, compassionate, and successful healthcare professionals.
Q. 5) How does CPS provide opportunities and facilities to its students?

Along with training of students, CPS also conducts the training of the faculties on a regular basis so that the faculties can impart the required training to the students, thus maintaining a standard of excellence in medical education.

Q. 7) CPS contribution to society?
By expanding our reach, CPS has had a positive impact on healthcare delivery in these regions. Additionally, CPS has been instrumental in contributing to the reduction of maternal and child mortality rates in Maharashtra through the training of diploma professionals, thus strengthening public sector hospitals and government systems.
CPS initiative to utilize the facilities of district and sub-district and trust hospitals and convert them into PG institutions and has increased the availability of PG doctors without financially burdening the state/central government.
Many CPS trained specialist physicians render their services in peripheral areas and small towns improving the medical facilities available to the community.
During the times of COVID pandemic, it was the CPS students who worked tirelessly in many municipal, district level, sub district level hospitals saving many lives. The CPS affiliated institutions served as COVID centers. Both CPS students and institutions actively participated in the vaccination drive.
CPS’s dedication to spreading health education nationwide while maintaining affordable fees for both institutions and students sets it apart from others.
